Betty's in a Box
Christi Michelle
A reprise of legendary folksinger, Huddie Ledbetter nicknamed Leadbelly. A tip of her hat to the original three-part medley song recording from 1939 knowns as Black Betty [Looky Looky Yonder] this time the tune finishes with a new addition to the medley with Christi Michelle's own original composition "Betty's in a Box" to close the innovative medley. Selectively omitting the "Yellow Woman's Doorbells" portion. Facts| Black Betty was first recorded in the field by U.S. musicologist John and Alan Lomax in 1933, performed a cappella by convict James [Iron Head] Baker and group at Central State Farm, Sugar Land, Texas. | The earliest meaning of "Black Betty" in the USA dates back to at least 1827 was a liquor bottle |
Christi Michelle's renovation of this medley takes us on a journey inspired by her great Nana Madam Betsy's true story about when she ran her own cathouse [brothel] in the upper part of the red light district of downtown Bellingham, in the most Northern parts of Washington Territory back in the late 1800s.
